What began as an idea in the basement of a two-bedroom home has grown into a multifaceted company serving clients across the country. Voice Exchange, originally known as Medical Exchange Answering Service Inc., was founded by Sandy Smith, the mother of our current Chief Medical Officer and Managing Partner, Dr. Lovell Smith. In 1984, Sandy, a nurse, was approached by a physician to establish an answering service for the hospital where she worked. This service allowed an outside operator to gather patient information over the phone, document and file it for physicians to process, and categorize patients by urgency. The goal of this service was to ultimately enhance patient care within their practice.

Sandy installed an extra phone line in her home and, after her shifts at the hospital, began taking and processing patient calls outside of hospital hours. Dr. Smith’s father also assisted in answering calls during the day, helping to create a full 24/7 answering service. As the business grew, it quickly outgrew the Smith household, leading to the expansion to a commercial site in 1987. Unfortunately, Dr. Smith’s father passed away shortly before that opening, but he played an integral role in laying the foundation for Voice Exchange. The commercial site marked a turning point for the company’s success, allowing Sandy to retire from nursing and focus on growing the business.

Sandy dedicated herself wholeheartedly to Voice Exchange until her passing in September 2013. Though she never received formal business training, her natural ability to succeed in the business world was undeniable. After 40 years of nurturing the company, Dr. Lovell Smith, inspired by his mother’s ambition, took over the family business. Dr. Smith credits his success as a surgeon, father, husband, and friend directly to his mother’s influence.

Founded on the core values of family, Voice Exchange continues to be run as a family business. Dr. Lovell Smith, Chief Medical Officer and Managing Partner, and his sister-in-law, Cimberlee Collier, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner, lead Voice Exchange with innovation and a steadfast commitment to service for prospective clients.
