Family Legacy: The Inspiring Story of Voice Exchange

What started as an idea in the basement of a two-bedroom home has now developed into a multifaceted company serving clients across the country. Voice Exchange, originally Medical Exchange Answering Service Inc., was created by the mother of our current CEO Dr. Lovell Smith. Sandy Smith, a nurse, was approached in 1984 by a physician to establish an answering service for the hospital where she worked. Implementing an answering service would allow an outside operator to gather patient information over the phone and document and file the information for physicians to process. Physicians could then categorize patients by urgency and as a result, inevitably enhance patient care within their practice.

Sandy Smith installed an extra phone line in her home and after her shifts at the hospital, she began taking and processing patient calls outside of the hospital’s working hours. Dr. Smith’s father also helped to answer patient calls during the day to bring their family company to a full 24/7 answering service. As time went by, the answering service quickly outgrew the Smith household and they expanded to a commercial site in 1987. Unfortunately, Dr. Smith’s father passed away shortly before the opening of the commercial site. Although his father did not see the expansion of their family company, Dr. Smith’s father played an integral role in the foundation of Voice Exchange. The commercial site skyrocketed the success of Voice Exchange and allowed Sandy to retire as a nurse to concentrate her efforts on the growing company.

Sandy Smith continued to put her heart and soul into Voice Exchange until her passing in September 2013. Upon her passing and after 41 years of watching her develop Voice Exchange, Dr. Lovell Smith decided to follow in the footsteps of his mother’s ambition and assumed the responsibility of taking over the family business. Though his mother never had formal business training, her capability to succeed in the business world was undeniable. Dr. Smith credits his success as a surgeon, father, husband, and friend directly to his mother.

Voice Exchange was founded on the core values of family and continues to be run as a family business.  Dr. Lovell Smith, Chief Executive Officer, and his sister-in-law Cimberlee Collier, Chief Operating Officer, fearlessly lead Voice Exchange in innovation and service to prospective clients. Our mission is to strive to be more than just a voice on the other line. As a direct extension of your business, we understand the value of delivering exceptional service and harvesting impactful relationships between our clients and their patients and customers. To uphold our family legacy, we encourage you to establish a legacy within your business by investing in your future.
